"Getting up each morning with the slow and gradual awakening of nature, and the genuineness in the eyes of fellow pilgrims made me understand that the beauty of the Camino is in the simple things that make you feel at one with what is around you."

“To tell the truth, it had never crossed my mind to take on the Camino de Santiago. Only last spring, together with decisions I faced regarding both my studies and work, I considered giving myself the gift of time, to clear my mind and to become in close contact with nature. Inspired by the book by Coelho on the Camino, I decided not to plan anything, and the next week my decision I left from St. Jean in the Pyrenees.

Being completely free of a typical daily work or study schedule gave me a freedom that, at the beginning was hard to fully enjoy, but that later, showed me all its beauty with moments and encounters that I would have only thought possible in my most positive imagination. There was no daily routine and no daily obligations, and this fact, as absurd as it sounds, disoriented me – who was used to only dealing with these obligations going through my head. Getting up each morning with the slow and gradual awakening of nature, and the genuineness in the eyes of fellow pilgrims made me understand that the beauty of the Camino is in the simple things that make you feel at one with what is around you.

Santiago and then Finisterre were not goals, but only stages of the lifelong Camino that once begun, continues as we face difficulties in everyday life as well. I can only be thankful for having been through such a rewarding experience, especially in the spiritual sense – being able to get in touch with the true essence of things where, in my opinion, you have to reset or ‘restart’ yourself in order to be able to effectively ponder life’s big decisions. My memories of meetings with wonderful people – and with truly quirky characters, the kind who use nettles as a whip to relieve inflammation with modest results – still make me smile as I write.

When Nilanj asked me if I could write on my experience, I realized how difficult it was to express in words the emotions of so many special moments, and how profoundly grateful I am to have lived them.

I will conclude with a thought written on a playing card I found in a deck, which was gently nudged upon me by the proprietor of a pilgrim albergue: ‘One can only see the Truth with a true heart.’ I think that this is the message of the Camino for me.

Gracias por todo!!!”
